Looking to improve the way you do things? Flex your creative muscle!

Everybody knows that creativity and innovation are important for business survival. However not everybody knows that creativity and innovation are far from the same thing. Although part of a process, they're very different. Creativity is looking for ideas outside what currently exists. Innovation is then taking those ideas and implementing them. Creativity then, is a journey of discovery while innovation involves evaluation, testing, reviewing and action.

Many companies talk about the need to innovate and to do things differently, but fail to address this very important distinction. You cannot have innovation without investing in creativity, just like a farmer cannot have reap a harvest if he does not sow. Without creativity, all new ideas are just basic re-workings of old concepts.

A way to improve the creative environment is to work more collaboratively. We don't live in a vacuum so we must work collaboratively if we want to thrive. You need to have a high-trust environment if you want creative teams in an innovative organisation. If there's a lack of collaboration then forget about business growth!

The good news is, being a human being automatically qualifies you to be creative. That doesn't mean you use it all the time. Creative thinking is like a muscle, it only gets stronger the more you use it. The bottom line is this: You cannot be NOT creative. You can only be more or less creative. How creative you are depends on how much and often you flex you creative muscle.
